Whatever happened to Malaysian Movies?

Am watching this show called 'Berlari Ke Langit' on Astrol Channel 43 - Kirana. It was good. Can you believe it? i can ler actually... cuz the movie looks like it was made 10 years ago... starred Rosyam Nor who is probably ... old now hahaha

Anywayz that was not the point ler... the point is Malaysian film industry is getting progressively lame and lousy (does it sound paradoxical?) And i ain't the first one to point that out either... it's just that everytime someone brings this out, they either get sued, arrested, or publicly humiliated. Sounds to me like we're a bunch of whining and pouting citizens who can't listen to opinion, and hence improve if there is room.

Good example: Yasmin Ahmad and her brilliant art, which received more public outrage (in the form of newspaper, TV programs and magazines) than credits that should have been given to her on such critical reflections of today's Malaysian society (not to mention her flair in choosing all the right, lengchai characters :D). Do watch, people - Sepet and Gubra.

So, what makes us so uptight these days? Is it globalisation? because we've seen and learnt so much that the more we see, the less we know? I imagine the film industry is just a small representation of the bigger (sad) state of Malaysia - the crazy censorship (kissing scenes, sex scenes and just about everything under the sun), abuse of power (to ban whatever they feel "offensive"), repression of opinion, suppression of expression and all the things that totally go against the principle of democracy.

*sigh*

this will never end

Jealousy

Media can be so irritating sometimes... or rather the people FROM the media industry...and everybody else's who layan it ler.. which practically covers almost the entire world population.

ngeh.

7 o'clock early in the morning already the radio start whining about how Daniel can win the 2nd Malaysian Idol. ah well. injustice? unfair? dislike? jealousy i would say. throughout the hour the public called in trying to sound very "smart" by speculating what could've gone wrong to justify the unfortunate decision on Friday. *sigh* why can't these people just let him be? (okay la since he's been on TV for quite long he can be considered a celebrity i supposed, which means his life will never be peaceful again) but I mean... whichever dirty trick he might have pulled or however wrong can the counting of votes be - Bomoh or no bomoh - the fact remains that he won! through 1.2 million of votes that is... if i'm not mistaken. The official website cited as 68% of the votes. Man... the power of SMS :O

empowerment=profit

I think at the end of the day, the one to benefit most is neither Daniel nor the contestants - it is the Telcos. Reminds me of the empowerment factor covered in my marketing class some time back. Something about letting the staff have some power for the betterment of all parties.. stuff like that. In this case it's give the audience power to decide and they'll bring cash FLOOD to you.
Talk about gila kuasa *giggles* okay i've lost it...AnywayZ.... Congratulations to Daniel (something) on his success and may he be able to satisfy the public in the future :D

Multimedia Writing

Another interesting thing i came across todaY as i got sidetracked from researching stuff for my assignment (sorry MabeL! :P). I found this journal of multimedia writing called inFlect and the screen shot below is one of the pieces available there.

Multimedia writing is an integration of text, visual images and sound into a reciprocal relationship; writing combining critical and creative content *InFlect About*.

It's fun, colourful and definitely eye-catching - a good way to attract/keep surfers' attention to your page. I wonder if this can be incorporated into teaching-learning process, this way the percentage of students sleeping in class might actually decrease :D .

Appleseed

Set in a war-ravaged 2131; the story centers on Deunan, a female soldier who is rescued from the violent ruins of an old city and taken to Olympus - a utopian metropolis. Here, she is reunited with her old partner/ex-lover, Briareos, who is now a cyborg.
Olympus is a complex society consisting of humans and the near-indistinguishable bioDroids, with both sides locked in a constant power struggle. Deunan and Briareos are soon involved with a plot that threatens to destroy the delicate human-bioDroids balance and bring about a terrible genocide. (Synopsis, Appleseed 2004-Movie)

ALOT to see in this movie with regards to the 3D animation. My first Japanese animation movie (what took me so long??!!) and thank god it did not disappoint me. The quality of it is really beautiful, although albeit SHINY i would say for the human; the curves of the body and cheeks shines too brightly - almost similar to metal shine. The robots are cool and all but most of all i love the background scenery and the cars. There was this part where Deunan got washed ashore and the ocean lay behind her... nIcE. As for the story line, it is interesting and spooky at the same time; interesting in a sense that it's not predictable or a cliche but spooky when you think of the possibility where the idea of it becoming real. Think of it this way: there has always been an argument to the future of technology i.e. artificial intelligence and stuff. What happens when no. of robots= no. of human.... or worse yet... what happens when no. of robots > no. of human? Or when the new breed backfires against humanity? There are movies like I Robot and Animatrix which "play" with that idea.

Anyhow... a movie definitely worth looking up :D

Amaztype

*book titles that are associated with Jen:- Sweet Jen, The Remarkable Journey of Prince Jen, Jen-X, Jen the Hen...etc* LOLz
jeni @ blogger

Cool flash application! I discovered through my friend this cute thing called Amaztype which apparently, is a typographic book search application using Amazon web services (actually music, videos and DVDs are also applicable). Design and created by Keita Kitamura & Yugo Nakamura.

How does it works? You just type in a word in the 'Search Word' box and Waaa la! The result will appear in the form of your search word... and i mean literally. In my case, i typed Jen and books title associated with that word appears in the form of.... well..... Jen :P Superbly impressive and fun to play with - especially the search result part where books images pop up here there everywhere. Then when you put your cursor over a particular book and click it, the book enlarges and brief details of the book pops out.

This is an example of what Manovich said as "phenomenon of Flash graphics on the Web" in his article Generation Flash.
