Whatever happened to Malaysian Movies?
Anywayz that was not the point ler... the point is Malaysian film industry is getting progressively lame and lousy (does it sound paradoxical?) And i ain't the first one to point that out either... it's just that everytime someone brings this out, they either get sued, arrested, or publicly humiliated. Sounds to me like we're a bunch of whining and pouting citizens who can't listen to opinion, and hence improve if there is room.
Good example: Yasmin Ahmad and her brilliant art, which received more public outrage (in the form of newspaper, TV programs and magazines) than credits that should have been given to her on such critical reflections of today's Malaysian society (not to mention her flair in choosing all the right, lengchai characters :D). Do watch, people - Sepet and Gubra.
So, what makes us so uptight these days? Is it globalisation? because we've seen and learnt so much that the more we see, the less we know? I imagine the film industry is just a small representation of the bigger (sad) state of Malaysia - the crazy censorship (kissing scenes, sex scenes and just about everything under the sun), abuse of power (to ban whatever they feel "offensive"), repression of opinion, suppression of expression and all the things that totally go against the principle of democracy.
*sigh*
this will never end
